چکیده

Grain microstructures in polycrystalline materials can be approximated by tessellation models known from stochastic geometry. However, for a given set of microstructural data, the choice of a particular model is traditionally based on researcher intuition. The model should provide a sufficiently good approximation to the data, while keeping the number of parameters small. In this paper, we discuss general aspects of the process of model selection and suggest several criteria for selecting an appropriate candidate from a certain set of tessellation models. The choice of candidate represents a trade-off between accuracy and complexity of the model. Model fitting is carried out by simulated annealing, applied in a consistent manner to twelve different tessellation models.

Probabilistic Model for Polycrystalline Microstructures with Application to Intergranular Fracture

A two part probabilistic model for polycrystalline microstructures is described. The model utilizes a Poisson–Voronoi tessellation for the grain geometry and a vector random field model for the crystallographic orientation. The grain geometry model is calibrated to experimental data through the intensity of the Poisson point field underlying the Poisson–Voronoi tessellation and the orientation ...

Description of the 3d Morphology of Grain Boundaries in Aluminum Alloys Using Tessellation Models Generated by Ellipsoids

Parametric tessellation models are often used to approximate complex grain morphologies of polycrystalline microstructures. A big advantage of such models is the substantial reduction in disk space required to store large, three-dimensional data sets, especially when compared with voxel-based alternatives. By selection of an appropriate tessellation model, a reasonably small loss of information...

Parametric representation of 3D grain ensembles in polycrystalline microstructures

As a straightforward generalization of the well-known Voronoi construction, Laguerre tessellations have long found application in the modelling, analysis and simulation of polycrystalline microstructures. The application of Laguerre tessellations to real (as opposed to computed) microstructures—such as those obtained by modern 3D characterization techniques like x-ray microtomography or focused...

3D reconstruction of microstructure in a commercial purity aluminum

The topic of reconstruction of polycrystalline microstructures is briefly reviewed. An example is given of using orientation maps to reconstruct digital microstructures with a representation of a polycrystal structure that includes crystallographic orientation information. The method uses packing of ellipsoids to approximate the grain structure, coupled with Voronoi tessellation. For the exampl...

A framework for automated analysis and simulation of 3D polycrystalline microstructures. Part 2: Synthetic structure generation

This is the second of a two-part paper intended to develop a framework for collecting data, quantifying characteristics and subsequently representing microstructural information from polycrystalline materials. The framework is motivated by the need for incorporating accurate three-dimensional grain-level morphology and crystallography in computational analysis models that are currently gaining ...
